When you're not shopping, you can visit one or all three of the city's museums. The Old Manchester Museum has items dating back to the early Manchester days. Settled by farmers in 1672, it didn't become incorporated as a city until 1823. After that, the world's largest silk mill (at the time) was established by the Cheney family, and a National Historic park now exists on the 175 acres where the mill and its workers lived and is available for touring. The Fire Museum displays relics from early firefighting days, and the Lutz Children's Museum addresses art, history, science and nature in a great atmosphere for children.

For the outdoor lover, the Manchester park system provides not only open space for court and field games, but also miles and miles of trails for hiking, running, walking or biking. Playgrounds abound in Manchester, where you can find a picnic table or a tree to park a blanket under for a Saturday afternoon event in the park. All 34 of the city parks provide at least a small area of parking, with Center Springs and Charter Oaks Parks offering the greatest number of amenities including baseball fields, basketball courts, playscapes and picnic area pavilions. A private nature center, Wickham Park, displays wildlife habitats on 53 acres, and Case Mountain Recreational Area is a nearby recreational area popular with mountain bikers and hikers.

Manchester Public Schools have scored well on the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) placing them in Safe Harbor status. This is excellent for the school system, making it a great place for your children, should you have any. If you're the one pursuing higher education, Manchester Community College is a two year college offering a wide variety of programs and classes.

A small town isn't complete without a well-known and well-attended annual event, and locally this would be the Manchester Road Race, which is held every Thanksgiving. 10,000 people participate every year, with thousands more as attending as spectators. Established in 1927, the race is just less than five miles long, and many of the participants enrich the fun by donning costumes.
